Olympus, a well trusted brand has just introduced their latest Olympus voice recorder; the Olympus VN-6200PC.
The Olympus VN-6200PC is very similar to the previously released VN-5200PC Olympus voice recorder. The updated
model features more memory and various other refinements making it a good choice for an easy to operate, compact
and affordable digital voice recorder.
The Olympus voice recorder is a great choice for emailing audio messages, dictation, songwriting, lectures,
meetings and of course notes! The VN-6200PC has more memory; 1GB, a longer battery life; over 444 hours in LP mode
and over 71 in HQ mode, greater frequency response, more files and more folders; 5 folders each capable of holding
200 files which makes it far superior to its predecessor.
The Olympus voice recorder also has many other great features such as variable voice activation and a dynamic
display of audio recording which although not completely necessary, they are great features to have. The VN-6200PC
requires some practice to get adjusted to but using it is fairly simple.
The file system is broken into 5 folders each capable of holding 200 files, every time you start and stop a
recording a new file is created. This Olympus voice recorder is capable of transferring files to the PC without any
additional software using a USB 2.0 connection; you simply plug the device into a windows based computer and it
appears in the control panel as a flash drive / external drive.
Once detected, you can access it as if it was a normal hard drive, adding and removing files. The VN-6200PC is
capable of storing non audio files however it is impossible to view them or utilize them on the actual device. It
is possible to copy any WMA file onto the VN-6200PC into one of the 5 folders and have it play back on the
device.
This particular Olympus voice recorder does not have any editing features so you will not be able to modify the
files on the device itself. The device does not come with any editing software so in order to edit files you will
have to purchase separate software for your pc and load the files onto the pc at which point you would be able to
edit them which is not a big deal considering the great price point of the Olympus VN-6200PC.
The VN-6200PC is a great device and is another wonder Olympus audio recorder however it is not without a few
flaws. First and foremost the VN-6200PC does not feature a 2.5mm (nor 3.5mm) headphone jack which means you won't
be able to use your standard headphones from your iPod or MP3 walkman.
The only other gripe would be that the supplied USB cable with this Olympus audio recorder is a mere 6 inches
long which is fine for a laptop but not nearly sufficient for a desktop.
In conclusion, this Olympus voice recorder is a great product for those who need simple, effective digital voice
recording. There may be other solutions with more features and built in editing but for a price nearly as
reasonable as the Olympus voice recorder and certainly not backed by a name as trusted as Olympus.
